Reaction product: deep blue or black granulation
Occurrence:
Macrophages: numerous granules.
Erythrocytes: normally one or a few fine granules (such erythrocytes are called siderocytes).
Erythroblasts: normally one or a few fine granules (such erythroblasts are called sideroblasts). Ring sideroblasts (not present in normal bone marrow) contain numerous granules located around the nucleus as a ring.
Staining: Perls' method
Comment: The normal amount of free iron deposits in macrophages of bone marrow shoud be visible as single, dark granules, as is the case in the picture. Magnification: x 100
